BOOK REVIEW

Title:  JIM ELLIOT: A Christian Martyr Speaks to You
Editor:  Robert Lloyd Russell
Review by:  The Old Schoolhouse Magazine
Reviewer:  Hillary Harm

“Robert Lloyd Russell’s book is not a book about Jim Elliot. It is, in a sense, a book written by Jim Elliot.”

“I read this book alongside my eighth-grade son. Too many books written for teens seem to talk down to them or minimize issues. They tend to focus on issues such as getting along with peers or parents, self-esteem, or behavioral goals. (Purity, dating issues, etc.) Jim Elliot spoke to my son about spiritual desire and delighting in God. He discussed sin and its effects on the body and soul of a Christian. He did a character study on Peter, and also discussed Christ as a prophet. These are subjects of depth and meat that are not often placed in front of teens. We had several discussions about topics brought up in the book, and I think it encouraged my son to reach for a higher standard of spiritual discussion, not merely settling for simple topics.”

“This book is one I would recommend. I enjoyed reading Mr. Elliot's talks and discussing the material with my teen, and appreciated the depth of the material.”

This book makes Jim Elliot’s own words available to everyone.

All of these thought-provoking messages are particularly appropriate for anyone interested in missions, missions history, or victorious Christian living.  My favorite portion of the book is the clear explanation of our need for a desire for God and the effects of sin on the life of an individual.

In summary, this book provides great insight into the thinking of Jim Elliot and also provides a lot of quotable material.  I cannot recommend this book highly enough for anyone who is interested in a more fulfilling Christian life.  In my opinion, it should be on the reading list of any Christian who seeks a closer relationship with Jesus Christ—especially those in junior high through age 40.  It will positively impact their lives!

BOOK REVIEW

Title:  JIM ELLIOT: A Christian Martyr Speaks to You
Editor:  Robert Lloyd Russell
Review by:  The Old Schoolhouse Magazine
Reviewer:  Hillary Harm

The life and death of Jim Elliot is a story very familiar to believers around the world. Books have been written and movies made about the men who gave their lives in obedience to God's call in 1956.

Robert Lloyd Russell’s book is not a book about Jim Elliot. It is, in a sense, a book written by Jim Elliot. As Mr. Russell explains in the opening chapter to this book, his family was well acquainted with the Elliot family when Mr. Russell was growing up, and he remained close to Jim Elliot's mother after Jim's death. In 1971, Mrs. Elliot gave Mr. Russell several recordings of talks Jim had done in 1950 and 1951. Mr. Russell transcribed the tapes, and compiled the transcriptions into a book.

The book is intended to be read by anyone 7th grade and older. Two of Jim Elliot's talks were to classes of 7th and 8th graders in a Christian School. The other two talks were primarily to audiences of adults.

I read this book alongside my eighth-grade son. We had several discussions about topics brought up in the book, and I think it encouraged my son to reach for a higher standard of spiritual discussion, not merely settling for simple topics.

The book is primarily transcripts of Jim Elliot's talks. The introductory chapter was meant to establish how Mr. Russell obtained the tapes, and provide a bit of background to them. The only "con" I found to the book, was a section in the back labeled "Additional Thoughts." In this section, Mr. Russell offers several ideas for the reader to share this book with others. Among his ideas are giving this book as gifts for Christmas or birthdays, giving copies to the youth in your church, writing positive reviews of the book on Amazon.com, or writing to the media and encouraging them to feature the book or interview the author. While I understand the author's desire to have the material in this book read by others, I found this section off-putting.

On the whole, this book is one I would recommend. I enjoyed reading Mr. Elliot's talks and discussing the material with my teen, and appreciated the depth of the material.

Title:  JIM ELLIOT: A Christian Martyr Speaks To You

Editor:  Robert Lloyd Russell

This book contains Jim Elliot’s own words in four messages which he spoke before going to the mission field.  Jim was one of the five missionaries martyred in Ecuador in 1956.  The work of these five missionaries and their deaths have had a tremendous impact on thousands of Christians.  Since their deaths over twenty books have been written about these men, their deaths, and the follow-up events.  The editor of this book is a friend of the Elliot family and knew Jim personally.  This book makes Jim Elliot’s own words available to everyone.

The first two messages were given to seventh and eighth-grade students and concern Christian living, including the effect of sin in the life of a Christian.  Another message, based on 1 Peter 1:3, examines the life of the Apostle Peter.  The message “God’s Prophet” traces the history of God’s prophets through the Old Testament and ends with God’s ultimate prophet—His own Son Jesus Christ.

All of these thought-provoking messages are particularly appropriate for anyone interested in missions, missions history, or victorious Christian living.  My favorite portion of the book is the clear explanation of our need for a desire for God and the effects of sin on the life of an individual.

This book is quite different in that the messages were transcribed from old wire recordings (which predated magnetic tape).  Jim Elliot had a passion for God and a fervency which was rare in his era, and perhaps even more rare today.  He was a true student of the Word of God and that really comes through in his spoken messages.

What I liked Most & Least About this Book / Author:

My favorite chapters were the first two, which present a clear explanation of our need for a desire for God, and the effects of sin on the life of an individual.

I do not have any dislikes of the book, but I do have a warning (see below).

ISBN Number:  978-16157976-4-6

My Review:  Jim Elliot was one of the five martyred missionaries in the 1950s. The work of these five and their deaths have had a tremendous impact on thousands of Christians. Many related books have been written, but this is only the second book which contains the actual words of Jim Elliot. (The other is The Journals of Jim Elliot.)

I would highly recommend this book to all Christians who seek a closer relationship with Jesus Christ--especially those in junior high through age 40. It will positively impact lives.

The book provides great insight into the thinking of Jim Elliot and also provides a lot of notable and quotable material. Anyone interested in Christian history or Christian missions will really appreciate the book.

I do have a warning. This book was transcribed from old wire recordings (which predated magnetic tape) and it was a different era when Jim was alive. Jim Elliot was on fire for God and had a fervency which was rare then, and even more rare today. He was a true student of the Word of God and it shows in his messages.

In summary, I cannot recommend this book highly enough for all who are interested in strengthening their Christian life.

Would you recommend this to a friend?   Yes

JIM ELLIOT: A Christian Martyr Speaks to You
Robert Lloyd Russell, Editor
This book contains the actual words of martyred missionary Jim Elliot in four messages which he spoke before going to the mission field. The first two messages were given to seventh and eigth grade students and are about Christian living including the effect of sin in the life of a Christian. The final two messages are also very readable - one about the Apostle Peter and the other an overview of the Bible from the perspective of Jesus Christ as God the Father's ultimate and final prophet on earth. Excellent thought-provoking content for seventh grade and up. Particularly good for anyone interested in missions, missions history, or victorious Christian living.
